Twilio Lookup API: Features, Pricing, and Phone Number Checks

Published Updated By GoodInbound team

What the Twilio Lookup API returns, what each package costs, and how to check phone numbers on incoming leads with carrier and line type included.

The Twilio Lookup API returns information about a phone number: its formatted versions, whether it's valid and, through paid packages, its carrier, line type, live status, caller name and SIM-swap history. Formatting and validation are free; carrier and line type cost $0.008 per request, so checking 10,000 numbers costs $80 before you add any other package.

If you're checking phone numbers on incoming leads at volume, GoodInbound Lead Screen is a drop-in fix that checks every number as part of screening the whole submission. It screens how every visitor fills in your form and stops automated list bombing, spam, and non-buyers sending unsolicited pitches from cluttering your pipeline, with five layers of protection:

  • Rules: domains you always accept or always block.
  • Behavior: how the form was filled in: typing, pasting, fill time, automation tells, and a built-in honeypot.
  • Network: data centers, VPNs, proxies, Tor, and bursts from one IP or device.
  • Identity: whether the email has a working inbox and isn't disposable or gibberish, and whether the phone number is real.
  • Message: the whole submission read for intent, so sales pitches, recruiters, and link offers are caught.

Every submission is classified into five types (lead, review, spam, junk, and bot), and only the real leads, based on your filters, are sent to your CRM. GoodInbound takes care of the entire flow end to end for you.

What the Twilio Lookup API returns

A basic Twilio lookup returns the number's international and national formats, its country, a validity result and any validation errors. Everything else comes from paid packages, each requested separately:

Package Information returned
Line Type Intelligence Carrier and number type, including mobile, landline and VoIP
Line Status Whether a number is active or reachable on its network
Caller Name Caller identification, US only
SIM Swap Changes to a mobile number's SIM
Reassigned Number Whether a number has been reassigned since a given date
Identity Match A comparison of supplied identity details with phone-based data sources

Requesting carrier and line type doesn't include live status, identity matching or SIM-swap data. Each is its own request and its own charge.

Twilio Lookup API pricing

Twilio charges per request for every package beyond formatting and validation. These are the rates on Twilio's pricing page as of October 14, 2026:

Feature Published price
Formatting and validation Free
Line Type Intelligence $0.008 per request
Caller identification $0.01 per request
Line Status, first 100,000 queries $0.007 per query
Identity Match $0.10 per request; varies by country
SIM swap and call forwarding Contact sales

For 10,000 leads, Line Type Intelligence costs $80. Adding Line Status brings it to $150.

The same checks with GoodInbound

GoodInbound's phone number lookup and validation API returns validity, fake-pattern flags, country, line type and US and Canadian carrier information, and phone checks are included in every plan. You don't pay per lookup, and the checks run as part of screening the lead, so the number is judged together with the rest of the submission.

Make a Twilio Lookup request

Twilio Lookup v2 uses one endpoint for every package:

TEXT
1GET https://lookups.twilio.com/v2/PhoneNumbers/{PhoneNumber}

Send the number in E.164 format with its country code, and name the packages you want in Fields:

Terminal
1curl --get \
2 'https://lookups.twilio.com/v2/PhoneNumbers/+14155552671' \
3 --data-urlencode 'Fields=line_type_intelligence' \
4 --user "$TWILIO_API_KEY:$TWILIO_API_SECRET"

Without Fields, the request returns only formatting and validation. To request several packages, list them comma-separated.

Valid doesn't mean real

Twilio's valid only means the number falls in a range a carrier can assign. A reserved 555 number or a made-up sequence in a valid range passes that check, which is why lead forms need fake-pattern detection on top of validation.

GoodInbound flags known fake patterns alongside validity, so a reserved 555 number is caught even when its format is valid.

Twilio Lookup coverage

Twilio's coverage changes by package and country: Caller Name is US only, and Canadian Line Type Intelligence lookups require special approval from Twilio. Check each package for the countries you serve before building on it.

Check phone numbers on incoming leads with GoodInbound

On a demo request, quote form or contact form, the question is simple: is this a real number your team should call? GoodInbound answers it at three points in your lead flow:

  • While the visitor is still on the form. Call the checks endpoint from your backend and show a correction prompt for an invalid number or a known fake pattern, such as a reserved 555 number.
  • Before the lead reaches sales. Lead Screen checks the phone number as part of its identity layer. Balanced screening warns on fake or invalid numbers; Strict treats them as a failed check.
  • When your team follows up. The normalized number, country, line type and carrier travel with the contact. Send email and phone together to get both sets of checks in one request.

Phone checks are included on every plan and don't use screened submissions. See the phone API guide and request example, or look up a single number with our free carrier lookup.

Frequently asked questions

Is Twilio Lookup API free?

Only formatting and validation. Carrier, line type, caller name and the other packages are charged per request. GoodInbound includes carrier and line-type checks in every plan.

Does Twilio Lookup verify who owns a number?

No. A lookup returns information about the number. It doesn't show that the person entering it controls it.

Why are some Twilio Lookup response fields null?

Twilio returns null for any package you didn't request in Fields. Request the package to get its data.

Can I request carrier information without live status?

Yes. Line Type Intelligence and Line Status are separate packages with separate charges.

What's a cheaper alternative to Twilio Lookup for lead forms?

GoodInbound. Its phone checks return validity, fake-pattern flags, country, line type and US and Canadian carrier information, included in every plan, and Lead Screen applies them to every form submission.
